Caring for the Caregiver: The Needs and Experiences of Caring for Children with Medical Complexity

Children with medical complexity are a growing, and highly vulnerable, population with little-to-no representation in healthcare research; even less represented are the voices of their caregivers. This presentation details a completed research study on parent experiences of caring for a child with medical complexity, and the unmet needs they identify – several of which can be addressed by Certified Child Life Specialists either through direct intervention, collaboration, or targeted advocacy. Objectives:

  • Examine current research on the needs, experiences, and outcomes for pediatric patients with complex healthcare needs and their families.
  • Reflect on the individualized experiences caregivers of pediatric patients with complex healthcare needs identified in a completed qualitative research study
  • Identify the unmet needs caregivers shared when caring for their child with complex healthcare needs across various settings.
  • Participants will review and explore opportunities for medical and psychosocial professionals to collaborate in practice and research to better meet the needs of caregivers and families of pediatric patients with complex healthcare needs.
