Magellan obtained her Bachelor's degree in Psychology from The University of Memphis in 2011. She went on to receive a Master's degree in Human Development and Family Studies, with an emphasis in child life, from The University of Missouri in 2013. She completed her child life internship at Seattle Children's Hospital, then moved to South Carolina where she began her child life career working in pediatric hospice for Hands of Hope. After a year and a half, Magellan moved to Texas and spent the next five years working as a Palliative Care Child Life Specialist for Baylor Scott & White Health. In 2020, Magellan transitioned to The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where she has developed their dynamically growing child life program for children of adult patients. This program has grown from one full-time position to five full-time positions and two part-time positions in less than three years admist a global pandemic. The child life program is also advancing with the hospital system's growth into the field of pediatrics, and has added a full-time pediatric child life specialist to the team. She now works at Cook Children's Medical Center as the Hematology/Oncology Family Care Coordinator, where she is re-developing and oversees their bereavement program.
Magellan also holds a Child and Adolescent Grief Counseling Certification, which lends well to her focus on child life services for children and families facing serious, life-threatening or life-limiting illness. Magellan has published multiple professional articles and co-led national presentations and webinars on child life services for children of adult patients, supporting children when a loved one is dying, anticipatory grief, traumatic grief, and burnout. She also recently co-authored a chapter on child life in pediatric and adult palliative care and hospice settings. Magellan believes in continued professional growth not only within herself, but empowering others to do so as well. She has previously been active in the ACLP Mentoring program and committee, and is currently the President-Elect for the Southern ACLP. Outside of work, Magellan is actively involved with her sorority, Alpha Delta Pi, the Junior League of Fort Worth, Leadership Fort Worth, and is the Vice President/Director of Fundraising for Love and Paws Rescue. Magellan is married to Chase and they have four fur babies- Sophie, Bumblebee, Windy, and Elsa.
