Intervention

Empowering parents and improving care of newborns exposed to substances

This presentation will provide attendees with information on substance use disorders as they relate to pregnant women and their baby. An Eat Sleep Console model of care can be implemented to significantly reduce the need for pharmacological treatment. Interventions to empower parents in supporting baby through withdrawal from prenatal substance exposures result in positive outcomes. Education and support for mothers with substance use disorders helps them thrive in their role as parent.

DOMAIN: Intervention

Objectives:

  • Describe what substance use disorder is and how it impacts birthing parents and their newborns.
  • Educate others on the benefits of promoting parental presence and participation in newborn care during the withdrawal period.
  • Explain how the Eat, Sleep, Console model has been found to decrease the amount of morphine doses per infant without increasing length of stay.
  • Provide attendees with interventions to support patients impacted by substance use disorder in the hospital and post-discharge.
