Team Medicine: A Recipe for Psychological Safety and Team Resilience

The Circle of Courage®, a concept often referenced regarding supporting resilience in children, can also be applied as an organizational framework. The Circle of Courage® focuses on four universal human needs: belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity (Brendtro, Brokenleg, and Bockern, 2013). Presenters will discuss department activities and programming that integrate the four components and create a workplace that supports the psychological safety, well-being, and longevity of child life specialists.

DOMAIN: Professional Responsibility

Objectives:

  • Understand the concept of psychological safety and the impact on team functioning.
  • Understand the Circle of Courage and its four components as a framework for strengthening team resilience and collaboration.
  • Provide examples of department activities and programming that support the four components of the Circle of Courage which lead to high performance and resiliency within a team.
