Navigating the Unknown: Child Life’s Role in Working with Foster Care Patients

Research shows that children who spend time in foster care are a uniquely vulnerable population, likely exposed to trauma and multiple adverse experiences. Therefore, it is paramount that child life specialists feel confident working with this population to provide developmentally appropriate support. This presentation will provide participants with an overview of the foster care system, specific needs of foster care patients, and tools and strategies to incorporate this knowledge into child life practice.

DOMAIN: Assessment

Objectives:

  • By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to verbalize a basic understanding of the foster care system in the United States, as well as the unique psychosocial risk factors impacting foster care patients.
  • By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to identify the role of the CCLS when working with foster patients, foster families, and the larger healthcare team
  • By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to understand the needs of children in foster care and develop tools to provide comprehensive child life services.
